    Communication Media – Different Types of Communication

    Channels of communication is the means or ways of transmitting the messages from the sender to the receiver. The media of oral communications are face-to-face conversation, video calls, phone calls, telephone or mobile phones, conferences, business meetings, etc. The communication channels of written communication are newspaper, letter, report, memo, email list, etc.

    According to Bartol and Martin, “The communication is the method used to convey the message to the intended receiver.”

    According to Defleur and Dennis, “A medium is a device for moving information through time or space.”

    So, Media or channel of communication is the means or ways that are used to transitioning the messages or information from the sender to the receiver.

    Different Types of Communication

    Verbal communication

    Verbal communication: this form of communication is the expression or exchange of information or messages through written or oral words. The various subdivision of this method of communication are as follows:

    1. Oral communication: Oral communication is the communication process in which messages or information is exchanged or communicated within sender and receiver or mass audience through the word of mouth. It can be divided into two ways: a. Speaking b. Listening.
    2. Written communication: this method of communication is the process of communication in which messages or information is exchanged or communicated between sender and receiver through written form. It is the non-verbal communication aspect of these communications channels. It can be divided into two ways: a. Writing b. Reading.

    Nonverbal communication

    Nonverbal communication is the expression or exchange of information or messages through without using any spoken or written word. Some of the forms of non-verbal communication are as follows:

    • Facial expression: this type of communication involves the use of facial signals to pass across information. Such communication channels are preferred methods in personal communications as it requires full attention of the target audiences.
    • Gestures: examples of this include pointing fingers, all-hands meeting, arms waving in the air, etc. It shows expression towards target audiences that might find it difficult to participate in face to face person communication.
    • Body language: communication that engages the human body. This communication process involves use of body for effective communication. Such communication scenario includes tilting head to one side, head nodding, direct eye contact, etc.
    • Others: other types of communication channels that involves non-verbal cues include proximity, touch, appearance, silence, and eye gaze. These are informal communication channels that can be used for sending messages to an intended audience.

    The choice of communication channel a speaker decides to use is solely dependent on his final goal and intentions.
